CO₂ removal for businesses

Not all emissions can be avoided. Recoal offers companies with difficult-to-avoid CO2 emissions verified CO2 removal certificates in mid-2025 to achieve their net zero targets.

Reduce and then remove emissions

Current climate research (cdr.fyi, IPCC) shows that reductions in CO2 alone will not limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels by 2050. Therefore, alongside the drastic reduction of emissions, carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies are crucial for preserving a habitable planet for future generations. To reliably calculate the impact of CDR solutions on the global carbon stock in the atmosphere, standards for quality assurance and verification of the effectiveness of these solutions are fundamental. In the CO2 removal sector, this is ensured through the process of Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV).

What does MRV mean?

Measurement, Reporting, and Verification describes a multistep process. This involves measuring the amount of greenhouse gas emissions removed by CDR solutions over a specific period and reporting the results to an independent third party. Upon successful verification by the third party, the result is certified, and CO2 removal certificates are issued.
Recoal uses moist waste biomass as a raw material for CO2 removal. The waste biomass absorbs carbon from the atmosphere and binds it.

Quality assurance through removal certificates

High quality, in terms of efficient, environmentally friendly, and permanent removal and storage of CO2, has been at the heart of Recoal’s operations from the outset. Therefore, we ensure that our CDR services are certified according to the highest standards for technical CO2 removal methods via MRV.

We collaborate with a partner accredited by the
International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA) (ICROA), which evaluates and verifies the collected data from carbonisation to geological storage, documenting the efficiency and effectiveness of the Recoal method for our future clients.

We are currently in this certification process and will be able to offer our first certificates on the German platform Ceezer

What are CO2 removal certificates?

Certifications in the carbon market follow the same principle as those in the food industry, where, for example, organic certificates are used. The goal is to demonstrate the otherwise unrecognisable quality of the CDR solution to clients.

In our case, the certificate is issued by a partner accredited by the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA), based in Switzerland. Within the MRV process, the partner sets the standards and methods for assessing the CDR. This MRV process is also reviewed at least once a year by an independent third party.

The removal certificates can subsequently be purchased by businesses to offset unavoidable emissions. One certificate represents one tonne of CCO2 removed from the atmosphere.

The next steps in the certification process

Highest quality and diligence are core values at Recoal. Together with our partner, we are currently preparing the final steps in the certification process.

From mid-2025, we will offer our first certificates for sale via Ceezer, thereby supporting businesses on their journey to net-zero.
