PRESS RELEASE
Zurich, 30 May 2025
The City of Zurich has selected Recoal as one of the innovative startups to receive support through its prestigious KlimUp funding program, in partnership with Bluelion. This decision highlights the city’s commitment to fostering early-stage technologies that can deliver real and lasting contributions to climate protection.
Recoal impressed the KlimUp jury with its ability to transform wet-waste biomass into hydrochar, a stable form of carbon that locks away CO₂ for the long term. At a time when businesses and governments worldwide are urgently seeking solutions for achieving net-zero, Recoal’s technology directly addresses the challenge of removing unavoidable emissions while simultaneously contributing to the circular economy.
KlimUp specifically supports projects that create measurable climate impact. To be selected, startups must align with four priority areas: reducing direct emissions, advancing negative emissions technologies, promoting intelligent and efficient resource use, and driving circular economy models. Recoal’s approach checks all of these boxes: it delivers permanent negative emissions, reduces reliance on waste disposal methods that release greenhouse gases, transforms discarded biomass into a valuable climate solution, and creates a pathway for companies to credibly compensate for their residual emissions.
Being chosen for KlimUp is not just a financial boost; it is also a recognition of Recoal’s potential to scale a pioneering climate solution from Zurich to the world. With this support, Recoal will expand its pilot activities, work towards certification of its CO₂ removal credits, and continue developing a technology that is both scientifically sound and scalable.
Recoal is a Zurich-based Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) company that transforms organic wet waste into stable carbon through Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC). The process converts wet-waste biomass into hydrochar, a solid material designed for safe underground storage where the carbon remains locked away for centuries. This permanent removal of atmospheric CO₂ is quantified into high-quality, verifiable carbon removal credits that enable industries and organizations to advance their climate strategies. Recoal’s approach offers a durable and scientifically robust pathway for scaling carbon removal at the global level.

KlimUp is an innovation program launched by the City of Zurich to support early-stage startups and non-profit initiatives that are building scalable climate solutions. Successful applicants receive up to CHF 250,000 in non-dilutive funding, as well as mentorship, milestone-based guidance, and access to Zurich’s growing climate-tech community. The programme is operated in partnership with Bluelion and aims to fill a critical funding gap for young ventures that address emissions reduction, negative emissions, resource efficiency, and circular economy solutions.
