Recoal got certified by Rainbow Standard and achieved "validated" status on the Rainbow Carbon Registry

A significant milestone in Switzerland’s carbon dioxide removal network: Recoal‘s technology has been officially certified under the Rainbow Standard and granted “Validated” status on the Rainbow Carbon Registry. This validation marks an important step forward in delivering transparent, durable, and science-driven carbon dioxide removal to the companies committed to real climate impact.

Undergoing a rigorous technical review by Rainbow Standard (formerly known as Riverse), one of the most respected science-based carbon credit standards globally, Recoal’s hydrothermal carbonization and subsurface carbon storage methodology has now been formally recognized as meeting stringent scientific and procedural criteria. This achievement underscores that Recoal’s approach of turning wet-waste biomass into long-lasting carbon sinks isn’t just theoretical but a validated, scalable reality.

The certification was independently audited by Enviance, an accredited Validation and Verification Body operating under ISO standards. The audit confirmed the integrity of Recoal’s methodology, monitoring plans, and carbon accounting framework, reinforcing confidence in the company’s measurements and processes.

As Recoal looks ahead to the launch of their pilot plant in 2026, this validation lays a solid foundation for issuing verifiable and durable carbon removal credits, all built through transparent, third-party–verified methods. It’s an important leap in their mission to offer durable and credible climate action tools to their business partners.

About Recoal

Recoal is a Zurich-based Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) company that transforms organic wet waste into stable carbon through Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC). The process converts wet-waste biomass into hydrochar, a solid material designed for safe underground storage where the carbon remains locked away for centuries. This permanent removal of atmospheric CO₂ is quantified into high-quality, verifiable carbon removal credits that enable industries and organizations to advance their climate strategies. Recoal’s approach offers a durable and scientifically robust pathway for scaling carbon removal at the global level.

About the Rainbow Standard ("Rainbow")

Rainbow is a market-leading carbon credit standard and registry, endorsed by ICROA – the industry’s benchmark for high-quality, third-party vetted programs. Formerly known as Riverse, Rainbow specializes in engineered avoidance and removal projects with robust ISO-aligned methodologies and public data transparency.

Credits issued under Rainbow are backed by strong scientific rigour, with each representing one tonne of CO₂ equivalent – either removed (in the case of Recoal) or avoided. The Registry functions as a fully transparent public ledger, tracking credits from issuance through retirement.

Becoming “Validated” means that Recoal’s project has passed Rainbow’s ex‑ante assessment and technical scrutiny, qualifying the company to appear in the Registry as a credible, third‑party certified carbon removal project.
